What is the Prostate Gland?

The prostate gland is a male sex gland which lies directly below the bladder. The urethra passes through this gland (which is approximately the size of a chestnut) in the form of a narrow canal.
What does the Prostate Gland do?
The prostate gland secretes a watery, alkaline substance in which the sperm cells are suspended and transported. It is, therefore, an important organ for reproduction.
Who is affected?
In approximately 50% of all men over 50 years of age there are signs of benign enlargement of the prostate gland. 60% of all men over 60 years of age and 80% of the 70 to 80 year olds are affected by prostatic hyperplasia.
Diseases of the prostate gland and their development stages:
Changes in the hormonal balance, which occur, as one gets older, lead to growths in the prostate tissue. These growths can be either benign or malignant. For this reason every male over the age of 45 should have a prostate examination once a year.
The prostate gland is situated close to the rectum, therefore a doctor can feel it quite easily via the anus.
There are three different prostate diseases:
The malignant tumor (cancer of the prostate gland) If cancer of the prostate gland is detected and treated in the early stages the chances of recovery are very good. About 1% of all prostate diseases are malignant (carcinoma of the prostate gland).
Inflammation of the prostate gland (prostatitis)
Prostatitis is the most common illness, which frequently arises in males from 15 to 50 years of age. The symptoms are similar to those found in prostatic hypertrophy.
The benign enlarged prostate (benign prostate hyperplasia, prostatic hypertrophy, prostatic adenoma
Approximately 90% of all prostate diseases are benign enlargement. The urethra narrows as a result of the swelling and emptying of the bladder is partially obstructed (in advanced stages this can be fully obstructed). The narrowing of the urethra - through which the urine is conveyed as well as the sperm cells - not only results in difficulties when urinating but also affects sexual intercourse.

Prostate gland enlargement occurs in 3 stages:
Stage 1 (The so-called sensitivity stage)
The first noticeable symptom is an increased desire to urinate (pollakisuria); the urinary stream is weaker and thinner and frequent passing of small amounts of urine (also during the night) is experienced. It is, however, still possible to empty the bladder almost completely.
The first stage can continue over a number of years and in some cases never passes into the 2nd stage.
Stage 2

Stage 3

For this reason urine is dripping continuously. The urine is also forced back into the upper urinary tract and then into the kidneys. This results in the kidneys functioning less effectively and finally leads to kidney failure.
